The average number of individuals in a private household in each country is provided in this dataset. The definition of a private household varies slightly from country to country but essentially comprises a group of people who live in a single dwelling, whether they are related or not.

In addition to the individuals in private households detailed here, there are collective or institutional households which comprise hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, orphanages, halls of residence for students, workers residences (common in the oil states of the Middle East) and religious communities (e.g. monasteries).

There are a number of key sources (detailed below) for this data but, where possible, this has been supplemented by country-specific sources of data, particularly where data is available from the most recent census carried out in a country.
